The ASAP academic foundation and passionate architects of Udaipur are hosting the first Udaipur Architecture Festival.

UAF2020 will take place in the third week of December i.e. 16 December 2020 – 17 December 2020 and is free to register for all the Architects and Design Professionals.

KEY TO BEING GLOBAL

Kazuma Yamao was born in 1978 in Kyoto, Japan and graduated from Kyoto University. He received the first prize of diploma in 2001.He completed his master’s degree from University of Tokyo. Kazuma joined CAt (C+A Tokyo) in 2004. He established GINGRICH architects in 2013 and reconstructed the company as WAIWAI in collaboration with his partners in Dubai since 2018.

PAUL JACKSON

A WORKSHOP ON ORIGAMI

Paul Jackson has been a professional paper artist, paper engineer, writer and teacher since 1983, specializing in origami and the folded arts.  He was one of the first origami professionals in the West.

He has written more than 40 books, the first of which were origami books for adults and children.  His more recent books have been about the application of folding techniques into design, a subject he has taught in more than 80 Universities and Colleges in 13 countries, to Design Students of many disciplines, including Fashion, Architecture, Ceramics, Jewellery, Product Design and Textiles.

He was one of the pioneers of folding/origami as Fine Art and has exhibited his folded artworks in many galleries and museums.  He has also curated several ground-breaking exhibitions of origami, undertaken many commercial commissions for print, screen-based media, festivals and more, and has been a consultant for companies such as Siemens, Nike, Tetra-Pak and Tata.

DERIVING INSPIRATIONS

Bill Bensley is a jack of all trades… Gardener, fisherman, architect, interior designer, lover of all things natural, and most of all, a wide-ranging explorer of as many corners of the earth as he can.

Raised amidst the orange trees of California, the Harvard Graduate took off for Asia the day after graduation and never looked back. After a few years working in Hong Kong and Singapore, he set up shop in Bangkok in 1989, soon followed by a BENSLEY branch in Bali in 1990. 

With a team of 150 interior designers, architects, landscape designers, artists and makers of all things beautiful – as well as his other half Jirachai and their six Jack Russells – BENSLEY has brought to life over 200 resorts, hotels and palaces in 30+ countries, and is on a never-ending quest to create their best work yet.

Over the years BENSLEY has become known as a hotel designer who integrates sustainability into all of his designs, and is now hoping to share this knowledge in the hopes that if the hospitality industry bands together, they might be able to do their bit in reversing climate change.

Amit completed Master of Architecture in Energy and Environmental Studies from University of Glasgow, United Kingdom and Bachelor of Architecture Degree from Pillai’s College of Architecture, Mumbai University, Mumbai, Maharashtra. He also did a diploma in Acting from Anupam Kher Acting School 'Actor Prepares', Mumbai.

Co-Author of Einstein's Tongue (Book): This work of word-art intends to act as inspiration to all those who intend to commit new mistakes rather than repeating the same ones. The stories compiled are real life experiences.

LIFE FOLLOWS ARCHITECTURE

 For Anna Heringer architecture is a tool to improve lives. As an architect and honorary professor of the UNESCO Chair of Earthen Architecture, Building Cultures, and Sustainable Development she is focusing on the use of natural building materials. She has been actively involved in development cooperation in Bangladesh since 1997. Her diploma work, the METI School in Rudrapur got realized in 2005 in collaboration with Eike Roswag and won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2007. Over the years, Anna has realized further projects in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Together with Martin Rauch she has developed the method of Clay Storming that she teaches at various universities, including ETH Zurich, UP Madrid, TU Munich and GSD/Harvard. 

She received numerous honors: The Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, the AR Emerging Architecture Awards in 2006 and 2008, the Loeb Fellowship at Harvard's GSD and a RIBA International Fellowship. Her work was widely published and exhibited in the MoMA New York, the V&A Museum in London and at the Venice Biennale among other places. In 2013 with Andres Lepik and Hubert Klumpner she initiated the Laufenmanifesto where practitioners and academics from around the world contributed to define guidelines for a humane design culture. In 2017 she was invited to give a TED talk.

LIFE AND PRACTISE

After graduating from Sir J.J. College of Architecture, Bombay, in 1983, Dean joined architect Gerard Da Cunha as an assistant in Goa in 1985. Enamoured by the soft and human scale of Goa's Architecture and lifestyle he decided to stay. In 1986 he became a partner in a firm called Natural Architecture, working on cost effective housing in a very Laurie Baker approach using waste building materials and innovative design. In 1994 he expanded base of design work, taking on small hotels, large houses and institutional work as principal architect of Dean D'Cruz & Associates. In 2001 he co-founded Mozaic, with general collaboration between disciplines as the core ethic. Having been part of the State Level Committee for the making of the Regional Plan 2021 for Goa, his current emphasis is on urban interventions, sustainable principles and conservation.

FESTIVAL FINALE

Arjan Dev Singh is a singer- songwriter from Jaipur, Rajasthan who has been writing song for almost a decade now. Professionally, he is an Architect and is practising for the past 6 years. He has recently launched his debut EP “MUSAFIR” on all music platforms along with a music video for the song “Musafir”.

V.Girish is a practicing architect and an academician by profession. Over the past few years he has been performing as a stand-up comedian.

As a standup comedian, as an architect, he gets to meet a lot of people, with diverse cultural, professional and ethnic backgrounds which helps in building his observational comedy enabling him to be a standup comedian, and also to understand people better as an architect.

He practices the genre of comedy know as observational comedy and believes in the simplicity of the content; thus, it allows him to see even the most mundane of the events with an eye for humor.

For the past one year he has been a regular performer at various comedy events within the city of Jaipur and outside.  He has opened for some of the top most comedians in India like Mr Kenny Sebastian and was a featured comic at events like the Times of India’s ‘Happy Streets’ at Albert Hall, The National Startup meet and Annual event at Mool Foundation. He has also delivered talks for Jaipur Arts meet ( pre event) organized by Kala Kartavya and Jodhpur Instagramers annual meet.

Gaurav’s penname is Raahi as he considers himself to be a traveller who is observing this world from a perspective. He feels that there is so much too observe in everyday things around us that even a million lifetimes are not enough to write about a single moment. But he tries. He tries to write on things that move him to his very core. He has attended and performed at various places including Delhi, Bombay, Pondicherry, Jaipur. Currently, he runs a YouTube channel by the name of Poetspace meant to provide a platform the growing poets who have the words and aim to shed light on written word and provide a comfortable platform for everyone to open up and express themselves.

About Event organizer

Architects Amit and Sunil in pursuit of contributing to society in terms of intellectual growth. Ar. Priyanka joined the journey to add another dimension to the cause. The idea is to trigger the society move towards level next not just in terms of money but in terms of emotional and ethical grounds thereby making this world a better place to live in.

It has been a beautiful journey till date with lot of helping hands. Special thanks to Ar Niriti, Ar Neeru and Rachna for their extraordinary contribution in laying this foundation.

Being Architects, not only entitles us to be responsible for creating suitable environment and spaces but also makes us realize some duties beyond that.

Conducting workshops is one of the source that has provided ASAP with a platform, where we can interact with people from different fields and make them experience to go through a very different journey that they have never been through. It is programmed to touch people’s lives and heart unconditionally but yet it does with grasp.

UAF is another such off shoot of the thought process to create a knowledge sharing platform for the complete Design Fraternity.
